What happens when credits run out
Learn what pauses when your organization reaches zero credits and how to get AI runs moving again.
Last verified 3 days ago
When your organization reaches zero available credits, new AI runs pause until credits are added or the included credits refresh at the start of the next billing period. Your workspace stays available, and you can still review the work your team has already created.
This article explains what pauses, what stays available, and what billing users can do next.
What pauses
New AI work pauses when there are no usable credits left. That includes sending a new Joule message, running AI Tools and workflows, launching scheduled runs, starting browser sessions, and other AI work that spends credits.
Ampere shows the paused state in billing and usage surfaces so your team knows why new AI work is waiting.

What stays available
You can still open Ampere and review existing work. History, settings, billing, saved project work, and previous AI Tool results stay accessible.
Browsing dashboards, reviewing past runs, opening saved results, and managing settings do not spend credits. You can use those areas to understand what happened, decide what to keep, and plan the next credit purchase.
How to resume AI runs
If you have billing access, choose one of these options:
- Select Buy credits to purchase a one-time top-up.
- Open Auto-recharge to configure automatic top-ups for future low-balance moments.
- Wait for included credits to refresh at the start of the next billing period.
Organization owners have billing access by default. Owners can also grant billing-admin access to teammates who should manage top-ups, auto-recharge, plan changes, and billing settings.
If you do not have billing access, ask an organization owner or billing admin to add credits, turn on auto-recharge, or confirm when the next included-credit refresh happens.
What to expect before you reach zero
Ampere can show a low-balance warning before your organization runs out. Treat that warning as a planning signal: review Usage, decide whether your team needs a top-up, and consider auto-recharge if you want Ampere to add credits automatically when the balance gets low.
For the order in which credits are used, see How credits work. For one-time purchases, see Buy top-up credits. For automatic top-ups, see Set up auto-recharge.
