Safe zone checker

Full-screen apps put buttons, account names, and captions on top of your video. Add an image or a video, mark where your text is, and see whether it stays clear on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram and Facebook Stories. Your files never leave your device.

Three steps

How it works

  1. Add a 9:16 image or video, or try the sample frame.

  2. Choose the platforms, then drag the box over your caption, headline, or logo.

  3. See where each app covers it, and download a PNG with the safe areas marked.

How to keep text clear of buttons and captions in vertical video

Contents

What a safe zone is

In a full-screen Reel, Short, Story, or TikTok, the app draws its own controls over your video: the account name and caption near the bottom, and buttons for liking, commenting, and sharing down the right side. Anything underneath them can be hidden.

The safe zone is the part of the frame those controls leave clear. Put words, logos, prices, and faces there, and let the background run to the edges.

The margins each platform publishes

Each number below comes from the platform's own documentation, checked on October 18, 2026. Meta and Google publish them for ads; organic posts show similar controls, so treat the same margins as a careful guide for both.

  • Instagram Reels: keep about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% of each side free of text and logos. On a 1080 × 1920 frame, that's about 269 pixels at the top, 672 at the bottom, and 65 on each side.
  • Instagram and Facebook Stories: Meta gives the same guidance, roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom, and 6% of each side.
  • YouTube Shorts: Google's safe zone template for vertical video ads marks 288 pixels at the top, 672 at the bottom, 48 on the left, and 192 on the right of a 1080 × 1920 frame.
  • TikTok: TikTok shares its safe zones as downloadable overlay files rather than numbers, and says longer captions cover more of the video. The checker uses the strictest of Meta's and Google's margins instead and labels it as an estimate.

Check the moment the text appears

The app's controls stay put while your video moves. If a caption or price appears partway through, drag the frame slider to that moment and check it there.

Controls shift a little with the device, the language, and the length of your caption, so leave some room beyond the lines rather than placing text right against them.

Share the result with your team

Download a 1080 × 1920 PNG of the frame with the safe areas and your text box drawn on it. It lists the platforms you checked and the date the margins were checked, so a designer or editor can see exactly what to move.
