Overview
Perplexity Web Search returns structured web search results from a query, including URLs, titles, snippets, and dates when available. Use it for source discovery, competitive research, current-result scans, and link gathering when you need the result list rather than an AI-written answer.
Use cases
- Find source URLs and snippets before writing a market, competitor, or category brief.
- Collect current public pages about a company, topic, product, or trend.
- Search within selected domains or exclude noisy domains from a research pass.
- Gather candidate URLs to inspect later with scraping, crawling, or content tools.
Input tips
- Write a specific query with the topic, company, region, or timeframe you care about.
- Set maxResults from 1-20; the default is 10.
- Set maxTokensPerPage from 256-4,096 when snippets need more or less page context.
- Use a 2-letter country code when regional search results matter.
- Use up to 20 domain filters; prefix a domain with '-' to exclude it.
- Use either a recency filter or specific after/before dates; specific dates take precedence if both are supplied.
Expected output
The AI Tool returns the query used, total result count, returned search results, and cost metadata. Each result includes URL, title, snippet, and optional publication date or last-updated timestamp. The output view shows the search query, returned and total counts, ranked result cards with domain, snippet, date metadata, copy/open actions, and a source label.
Caveats
- This AI Tool returns search results and snippets, not a synthesized answer.
- Search results can change between runs and may not represent exhaustive coverage.
- Snippets are extracts, not full page text; use a scraping or content AI Tool when full pages matter.
- Domain, country, recency, and date filters can exclude useful sources.
- When recency and specific date filters are both supplied, the specific date range is used.
